Clay Looms
2017–Ongoing
I began working with pottery in 2017 and quickly fell in love with clay — its responsiveness, its memory, and its ability to hold gesture. This relationship led to the development of my Clay Looms series, where I experiment with the intersection of clay and fiber. Bringing these two craft disciplines together allows them to speak a new language — one that is tactile, intuitive, and rooted in making.
Clay Looms celebrates the union of clay and fiber, weaving together two ancient traditions: the shaping of earth and the interlacing of thread. Each discipline carries its own history, rhythm, and vocabulary, yet when combined, they form a shared grammar. Clay becomes structure, fiber becomes voice, and together they create a dialogue that extends beyond function into expression.
Designing the clay looms offers me a great deal of freedom to explore two-dimensional form, surface, and structure. Introducing fiber into these forms deepens the conversation between materials and is deeply satisfying both conceptually and physically. I am continually pushing the boundaries of scale, shape, and proportion, exploring how far the clay loom can evolve while still honoring the integrity of both craft traditions. Through this process, making becomes a form of fluency — an ever-expanding language shaped by the hand.
